Updated: Jul 14, 2023

Today, we'll be sharing the delightful recipe for Irish Soda Bread! Straight from the heart of Ireland, this classic bread is a beloved staple known for its simplicity and delicious taste. With its crusty exterior and tender, slightly dense interior, Irish Soda Bread is perfect for any occasion. So, let's gather our ingredients and embark on a culinary journey to the Emerald Isle!

Irish Soda Bread

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 2 cups buttermilk

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (optional, for brushing)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Make sure the ingredients are evenly combined.

  3. Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk. Using a wooden spoon or your hands, gently mix the ingredients until a sticky dough forms.

  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough gently for a minute or two until it becomes smooth. Avoid over-kneading, as it can make the bread tough.

  5. Shape the dough into a round loaf. To do this, flatten the dough into a disc and fold the edges toward the center, creating a smooth ball. Place the loaf onto the prepared baking sheet.

  6. Using a sharp knife, make a deep cross-shaped incision on the top of the loaf. This not only gives the bread its distinctive look but also helps it bake evenly.

  7. Place the baking sheet with the dough into the preheated oven. Bake for approximately 30-35 minutes or until the bread has a golden brown crust and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

  8. Once baked, remove the bread from the oven and transfer it to a wire rack to cool. For a glossy finish, you can brush the top of the loaf with melted butter while it's still warm.

  9. Allow the bread to cool completely before slicing. This will help retain its shape and texture.

  10. Serve the Irish Soda Bread sliced and spread with butter, jam, or any of your favorite toppings. It's a delightful accompaniment to soups, stews, or simply enjoyed on its own.

With its crusty exterior and soft interior, this bread is a testament to the rich culinary heritage of Ireland. We hope this recipe brings you warmth, comfort, and a true taste of Irish tradition. Sláinte!
